If I was right there with you drinking a cup of coffee, and could ask you what 3 of your current goals are, would you be able to answer without too much thought? Do you know right away what they are?
When I don’t have clear goals, life can feel a bit directionless and unfulfilled. If you are feeling a bit foggy these days, establishing or redefining some goals may be just what you need.
When we don’t have specific goals to work toward we are less likely to achieve our full potential.
If I don’t create a goal of exploring the possibility of having my mother’s artistic talent, I will never find out if there is an artist in me hidden somewhere deep down inside. I may never achieve my full potential in this area if I continue to not actually make it a goal of mine.
And in order to make it an actual goal and not a wish, I want to put actionable steps in place. I want to create structure around my goal, or I may never get there. It would only remain a wish.
Yes. I wish I was an artist. I wish it came natural – like with no practice! But I know that is not realistic. Artists practice at their craft just like you and I practice at all the things we hold as important in our lives. And if I am to pursue painting, I will need to take actual steps. Do actual things. Make a plan. Create the structure of practice.
Do you wonder if there is untapped potential hiding away in you? Is there something that peaks your interest just a little and you wonder if you could actually be good at it? Maybe song writing or learning an instrument? Or maybe there is a career path or an undiscovered entrepreneur in you that needs to shine.
I took up coaching nearly a decade ago. I’ve put in over ten thousand hours and a bunch of financial investment, too. I wouldn’t be here without a whole lot of structure! Yes. there are parts of this that come naturally for me. But I also need the training, coaching, and study to be effective. I needed structure.
I’m not sure if you know this…but structure is not a natural thing for me. It totally goes against my personality. It goes against my EVERYTHING. I was the free-spirit homeschooling mom that would rather explore tide pools, bake sourdough and climb….then learn Latin. (We it all. Latin at the beach with fresh bread in tow.)
It is in having goals combined with the structure of practice that the potential inside us is uncorked. And I don’t mean the potential that you SHOULD be. We don’t live by the ‘shoulds’. I mean the potential that you GET to be. Like a seed with life just waiting to burst out of its protective shell. Its green tiny sprout grows into a full blown tree that people sit under on a beautiful day. THAT kind of potential. That kind of potential is in YOU.
Is there something you want to turn into more than a wish? Is there a wish that needs to become a goal? A goal that you can begin creating structure around so you can, one-step-at-a-time, get there?
I would love to challenge you to share this goal with a friend! Let them know what the structure is that you will be creating around that goal. This is sure to move it beyond being a wish. This is sure to increase your sense of fulfillment and make life more meaningful for you as well!
Onward!
